No problems with a fresh machine however, this is taken care of before the user gets it.

So planning in to update recorders is a pain, as the recording breaks when an update is pushed out and the machine isn't rebooted. Our machines sleep out of hours, but never actually reboot to avoid interrupting anything staff are working on.

Many of the issues for us seem to be on more recent builds of the recorder (>8), so we are currently running older builds to at least keep the presence of S360 there, and put up with the recording missing newer features and not working with newer browsers etc, but for software that we pay for, it's certainly not something we are currently impressed with. The behavior is the same for freshly built machines, the only apparent requirement for us to have troubles is Windows 8.1.ħ and 8 generally have no issues.

Strange, and thanks for the suggestion! But, all but 1 of the users here on site don't have admin rights to their own workstations. The problem - and it is a big one - is 8.1.Īre any other SysAdmins experiencing similar problems to us? Or are we the only ones pulling our hair out? Windows 7 and Windows 8, work as well as we would hope.

The issues that we are experiencing - aside from very recent issues with Chrome crashing on the latest recorder on all OS’s - are mostly limited to Windows 8.1 machines. Coupled with the release of new recorders almost every time Firefox and/or Chrome have an update released, the new recorder must be downloaded, applied, deployed and machines rebooted, interrupting staff work flow and facilitating the need for an excuse from us to reboot, as well as drawing valuable time away from other critical projects that we as a department are pursuing. We have cases open with Spectorsoft as far back as April/June, and while progress is being made, it is slow. We’ve had to chase the status of our open cases on several occasions, and machine issues and downtime is - for us - to be avoided at all costs. When we log a case with Support, after providing logs, making various changes and scheduling access to production machines to allow the Spectorsoft engineers to repro the issue and develop a fix in house, it is often easier to just remove the recorder all together. I have spoken to Spectorsoft, who have confirmed that Windows 8.1 is indeed supported, but we continue to experience numerous clashes with the Spector 360 recorder and instances of Windows 8.1. Making us as systems administrators look unnecessarily incompetent and unprofessional. Meaning that when a problem arises, we have to make repeated excuses to our colleagues as to why the problem is happening and why it isn’t fixed. Unfortunately, the nature of Spector means that mentioning the software to other employees is taboo. I should note that we have a large variety in terms of computing hardware at our business, these issues have been experienced on the low end sales machines (4GB RAM, i3’s), but also on the high end developer machines (8GB RAM, i7’s and SSD’s).

Here, is what we have found when using S360 with 8.1.Įvery machine that runs on Windows 8.1 (Pro or Enterprise) has experienced performance hindering issues the moment the recorder is installed Windows explorer crashing frequently, Google Chrome crashing in varying degrees of severity, our own in-house software encountering numerous issues, one instance of conflicting with SQL and general PC performance degradation.

The nature of our business means that we must use Windows 8.1 in our environment. I am a systems administrator for a company that has been a customer of Spectorsoft for several years, and would like to add my experiences for other SysAdmins to understand what they may face when using Spectorsoft’s Spector 360 recording software.
